Named after the African country, reflecting the "Africa" theme of the year it was created (1997). Togo is a grained leather made from baby calf skin. It is extremely popular due to its scratch resistance and ability to hold its shape.

First appeared in the collections: 1997

Appearance: Matt finish, round, irregular grain; veins and wrinkles are often visible and pronounced

Feel: Dry, responsive, and well-rounded

Hand: Yielding

Change over time: Softens and becomes more supple with use.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

    I bought this a few years ago for a big birthday and it has been in constant rotation since. The chalk colour has gone very slightly creamier which I actually prefer. Corners are still crisp. I've had it cleaned once. If you're scared of pale bags, Togo is the grain to do it in.

My daughter borrowed this within a week of it arriving and I've barely seen it since. Gold Epsom takes a knock better than Swift would and the gold hardware still looks new after a summer of her using it as a night out bag. 19cm means she can't fill it with rubbish either.
