Named after the African country, reflecting the "Africa" theme of the year it was created (1997). Togo is a grained leather made from baby calf skin. It is extremely popular due to its scratch resistance and ability to hold its shape.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

Craie in Togo has a warmth to it that the Epsom version doesn't. Slightly creamy rather than pure chalk.

Took this to Italy in June and it was exactly right with linen and everything else I packed. Fits a phone, sunglasses, a small pouch, passport and a bottle of water if I'm brave. The palladium stayed clean but the base picked up a mark on a restaurant floor that I'm choosing to see as character.
