Named after the African country, reflecting the "Africa" theme of the year it was created (1997). Togo is a grained leather made from baby calf skin. It is extremely popular due to its scratch resistance and ability to hold its shape.

Appearance: Matt finish, round, irregular grain; veins and wrinkles are often visible and pronounced

The story behind
A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

Etain with gold instead of palladium is warmer than the usual pairing and it stops the grey looking cold.

This is the one I take on flights. 13 deep swallows a laptop sleeve, a scarf, a book and all the airport nonsense. Five years old and the Togo has not slouched much, the base is still flat. Corner wear is minimal for a bag that has been to Tokyo twice.

I've bought three of these over the years in different colours and jaune Milton is the one I actually reach for. Epsom means I can wipe it down when it's rolling around the bottom of a tote. No card slots at all though, so it won't replace a wallet.
