Named after the African country, reflecting the "Africa" theme of the year it was created (1997). Togo is a grained leather made from baby calf skin. It is extremely popular due to its scratch resistance and ability to hold its shape.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

Etoupe with gold hardware is warmer than the palladium version. More beige, less grey, if that makes sense.

This is the bag I take when I can only take one. Etoupe means nothing clashes, Togo means I don't flinch when it gets knocked, and 13cm of depth takes a day's worth. If I'm picking a fault, the gold reads a bit dressier than I want on a Saturday.
