Named after the African country, reflecting the "Africa" theme of the year it was created (1997). Togo is a grained leather made from baby calf skin. It is extremely popular due to its scratch resistance and ability to hold its shape.

Appearance: Matt finish, round, irregular grain; veins and wrinkles are often visible and pronounced

The story behind
A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

Etoupe is the one everyone tells you to buy first and annoyingly they are right. Togo hides scuffs, palladium stays cool.

A copy of the receipt came with it plus the booklet and the felt, everything you would want. I have carried it every day since March and there is not a mark on it. If I had one gripe it is that etoupe is so safe I sometimes wish I had gone for a colour.

I did not know what Vibrato was before I saw this and now I want everything made from it. The edges look almost like a book block. Chocolate Box calf on the handles and base keeps it from looking like a craft project. At 31 it holds plenty and the zip top means nothing falls out.
