Named after the African country, reflecting the "Africa" theme of the year it was created (1997). Togo is a grained leather made from baby calf skin. It is extremely popular due to its scratch resistance and ability to hold its shape.

Appearance: Matt finish, round, irregular grain; veins and wrinkles are often visible and pronounced

The story behind
A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

Bought secondhand from 2022 and the Togo has already relaxed slightly at the sides, which I prefer to box fresh.

My mother has carried an etoupe Birkin for fifteen years and I finally understand why. It does not fight with anything I wear and the Togo takes a beating. Mine came with the lock set, booklet and felt but no receipt, which did not bother me.
