This leather is a contemporary reinterpretation of the classic Barenia. It features a minuscule printed grain that replicates a drummed grain, combining the patina of Barenia with a textured finish.

First appeared in the collections: 2016

Appearance: Matt, minuscule printed grain

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

    Water spots on Barenia are real and I got one within a week from a splash at the sink. I was told to leave it and let the leather even out, and it has mostly faded. Patina is the point here, so if you want pristine, buy Epsom.
