Named after the African country, reflecting the "Africa" theme of the year it was created (1997). Togo is a grained leather made from baby calf skin. It is extremely popular due to its scratch resistance and ability to hold its shape.

First appeared in the collections: 1997

Appearance: Matt finish, round, irregular grain; veins and wrinkles are often visible and pronounced

Feel: Dry, responsive, and well-rounded

Change over time: Softens and becomes more supple with use.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

Ordered this to wear my New Drag 22 across the body and it has completely changed how much I use that bag. Went from twice a month to most days. Epsom in gold also seems to hide scuffs better than my darker straps do.

It fits a phone, a wallet, sunglasses and a small notebook and then it is done. The interior back pocket is where my cards live. Zip closure is what sold me over the open top bags, I take the metro daily and I want things shut.

A 25 in alligator is a serious thing to carry around and I do not do it casually. It came with everything, lock set, strap, cites certificate, receipt and felt, all in the box. The matte finish is what makes it wearable in daylight because a shiny yellow would be far too much.
