These are the most precious and exclusive exotic leathers used by Hermès. Porosus crocodile and Niloticus crocodile feature symmetrical scales and come in shiny (Lisse) or matte finishes. Alligator comes from the Mississippi river and is renowned for its larger scales and intense color depth.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

I own a Togo gris perle already and this one sits completely differently. The scales catch the light in a way that makes the grey shift from almost lilac to a plain dove depending on where I'm standing. It's stiffer and heavier and I use it maybe once a month.

Gris perle in alligator is such a soft cool grey. It changes with the light more than a leather version would.
