Named after the African country, reflecting the "Africa" theme of the year it was created (1997). Togo is a grained leather made from baby calf skin. It is extremely popular due to its scratch resistance and ability to hold its shape.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

I'd waited a long time for a 25 and got offered this out of nowhere on a Tuesday. Took it to my sister's christening the following week and my mum spent ten minutes turning it over. Togo has kept its shape completely.
