Named after the African country, reflecting the "Africa" theme of the year it was created (1997). Togo is a grained leather made from baby calf skin. It is extremely popular due to its scratch resistance and ability to hold its shape.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

I hunted a rose gold hardware bag for two years and this one turned up preowned with barely any wear on the feet. Togo in tourterelle is forgiving, it never looks dirty when it gets dusty, and the warm hardware stops the grey being cold. No box, which bothers me more than it should.
