These are the most precious and exclusive exotic leathers used by Hermès. Porosus crocodile and Niloticus crocodile feature symmetrical scales and come in shiny (Lisse) or matte finishes. Alligator comes from the Mississippi river and is renowned for its larger scales and intense color depth.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

Black matte alligator with gold hardware is about as serious as a bag gets. No shine on the leather so the gold does all the work.

It lives in the dustbag and comes out for occasions. I know that is a waste but I cannot make myself use it daily.

I went back and forth between shiny and matte and matte won because I did not want anything that looked wet. The scales are still completely visible, ...More
I went back and forth between shiny and matte and matte won because I did not want anything that looked wet. The scales are still completely visible, just soft. The 25 in alligator is heavier than the Togo version which surprised me. Cites certificate, receipt and felt all in the box.
