Named after the African country, reflecting the "Africa" theme of the year it was created (1997). Togo is a grained leather made from baby calf skin. It is extremely popular due to its scratch resistance and ability to hold its shape.

First appeared in the collections: 1997

Appearance: Matt finish, round, irregular grain; veins and wrinkles are often visible and pronounced

Feel: Dry, responsive, and well-rounded

Change over time: Softens and becomes more supple with use.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

Rose purple is hard to photograph. Mine reads pink indoors and definitely purple in daylight, which took me a while to get used to.

Togo in this colour has such depth, the pebbled grain means the tone shifts across the panels. It's a 25 with 13 depth so it holds more than the width...More
Togo in this colour has such depth, the pebbled grain means the tone shifts across the panels. It's a 25 with 13 depth so it holds more than the width suggests. No box or dustbag came with mine, just the lock set, rain cover, receipt and felt, so I sorted storage myself.
