Named after the African country, reflecting the "Africa" theme of the year it was created (1997). Togo is a grained leather made from baby calf skin. It is extremely popular due to its scratch resistance and ability to hold its shape.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

Rouge vif is a true bright red, no orange in it, no blue. With gold hardware it goes full on and I would not have it any other way.

Came with the lock set and nothing else, no box, no dustbag, which I knew going in for a 2018 bag but it still felt bare. The bag itself is immaculate. Togo in a bright red hides marks better than I expected and the colour has not faded at all.
