The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

I went sellier because this one lives at restaurants and it needs to stand up next to my chair. It does. Epsom in etoupe wipes clean and the gold plaq...More
I went sellier because this one lives at restaurants and it needs to stand up next to my chair. It does. Epsom in etoupe wipes clean and the gold plaque has no wear at all on a 2022 bag. It is stiff enough that closing it over a full load is a fight though.

A sellier Birkin is rarer than the standard one and the flat edges make etoupe look sharper than it does in Togo.
