The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

Sellier Epsom in gold is so rigid it stands up empty on the shelf. Palladium stops it looking too brown and dull.

I went back and forth between Togo and Epsom for about a year. Epsom won because I wanted structure and I did not want a bag that slumps. It does feel a bit plasticky in the hand, I will admit that, but it wipes clean with a damp cloth and that suits my life.

The 25 is my limit for daily use, W25 H20 D13 takes a small wallet, phone, keys and a compact and nothing more.
