Named after the African country, reflecting the "Africa" theme of the year it was created (1997). Togo is a grained leather made from baby calf skin. It is extremely popular due to its scratch resistance and ability to hold its shape.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

Two years in and the Togo has softened at the corners while the alligator panels look untouched. They age at different speeds.

I went back and forth on a Touch for a year, worried the two materials would look busy. In person the matte alligator reads as texture, not pattern. The Togo body means I can actually use it. Still, it lives in the dustbag between outings and I check the forecast first.
