Named after Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver's Travels, to highlight its resemblance to the now-discontinued Gulliver calfskin. Swift is a fine, semi-smooth leather that absorbs dye beautifully, resulting in radiant colors.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

Vert Mangrove is deeper than I expected, almost a bottle green against the ecru canvas panels.

Took it to a garden lunch in June and it was the right bag. Palladium keeps the green cool rather than earthy.

I was choosing between this and the black and ecru version and the green won because I already own too much black. The Swift trim has such depth in sunlight. My only note is that the pale canvas will not stay pale, so go in knowing that.
