These are the most precious and exclusive exotic leathers used by Hermès. Porosus crocodile and Niloticus crocodile feature symmetrical scales and come in shiny (Lisse) or matte finishes. Alligator comes from the Mississippi river and is renowned for its larger scales and intense color depth.

Appearance: Structured scales, either highly glazed or matte

Feel: Structured and textured

Hand: Rigid

Change over time: Develops a deep patina; shiny finish softens, while matte finish acquires a subtle glow

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

    Bleu Izmir in shiny niloticus is a properly saturated blue and the gloss makes it look almost enamelled. Not a subtle bag.

    A shiny croc 30 is a lot of bag and I don't take it out casually. It lives in the felt and the dustbag and comes out for dinners and one wedding a year. The scales still lie perfectly flat after ten years which says something about how it was cut.
