Named after the African country, reflecting the "Africa" theme of the year it was created (1997). Togo is a grained leather made from baby calf skin. It is extremely popular due to its scratch resistance and ability to hold its shape.

Appearance: Matt finish, round, irregular grain; veins and wrinkles are often visible and pronounced

Feel: Dry, responsive, and well-rounded

Change over time: Softens and becomes more supple with use.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

    Bought this preloved and honestly it looks better broken in. The Togo has relaxed enough that the top slouches a little when I leave it open, which I prefer over stiff. Craie has picked up a couple of faint marks near the handles that I have chosen not to see.

Vert peppermint in matte alligator is the prettiest thing I own and I say that as someone who does not usually go for exotics. The matte finish keeps the scales soft rather than glassy, and against palladium the mint goes almost grey in low light. Cites certificate came with it.
