Named in tribute to the daughter of the designer who introduced it into the collections, this leather was developed for luggage and is the ultimate example of a grained leather that has been drummed. This process softens the skin and brings a generous grain to the surface.

First appeared in the collections: 1992

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

    A 2006 bag and the Clemence has gone completely soft, corners are rounded and it slumps when open. I like it that way. Came with the padlock, keys and clochette but no box. 30 by 22 by 15 swallows a work laptop and a lunch and still closes.

Ordered this for my mother who has been carrying the same black bag since 2011 and refuses to change. She now has a green horse on it and pretends not to be delighted. The lambskin is soft enough that she calls it squishy, which is her highest praise.
