Named after the African country, reflecting the "Africa" theme of the year it was created (1997). Togo is a grained leather made from baby calf skin. It is extremely popular due to its scratch resistance and ability to hold its shape.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

Etain is the grey that works in every season. With gold hardware it goes slightly warm, which I did not expect.

This is a 2017 bag and it has clearly been used, which honestly was the appeal. Togo at that age has a softness the new ones do not. Corners are good,...More
This is a 2017 bag and it has clearly been used, which honestly was the appeal. Togo at that age has a softness the new ones do not. Corners are good, the hardware has fine hairlines under the gold, the clochette leather has darkened.
