Ostrich skin is a precious leather identifiable by its follicles, from which feathers grow. Hermès flattens these follicles and triples the skin to create a material with a unique, two-tone appearance.

First appeared in the collections: 1920

Appearance: Pronounced follicular grain, matte-to-satiny finish

Feel: Firm and textured

Hand: Rigid

Change over time: Sensitive to light; darkens and develops a satiny shine

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

    Bought it secondhand and it arrived with the lock set and dustbag but no box, which I was fine with. The quill bumps are more pronounced on the front than the back panel, which I gather is normal. Palladium against graphite is very cool toned, almost architectural.

I chose sellier because I wanted the crisp edges and I have never regretted it, but Epsom really is unforgiving. Any dent stays a dent. Mine came with the strap and lock set and the full box, and the corners on a 2019 bag are still sharp, which tells you something.
