Lizard skin is a rare and precious exotic leather prized for its small, symmetrical scales and high-shine finish. Hermès uses Niloticus lizard from the Nile river.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

    Black lizard scales are so fine that from across a room it just looks like a very glossy noir bag. Up close it is a completely different story.
