Named after Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver's Travels, to highlight its resemblance to the now-discontinued Gulliver calfskin. Swift is a fine, semi-smooth leather that absorbs dye beautifully, resulting in radiant colors.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

Toile H body with the noir Swift trim is so much lighter to carry than an all leather 30. That was the whole reason I went for it.

The canvas keeps the weight down and the Swift corners take the abuse, which is the sensible way round. That said Swift marks easily and my corners already have a couple of scuffs from putting the bag on the floor. The rain cover came with it, which tells you something.
