Named after the African country, reflecting the "Africa" theme of the year it was created (1997). Togo is a grained leather made from baby calf skin. It is extremely popular due to its scratch resistance and ability to hold its shape.

First appeared in the collections: 1997

Appearance: Matt finish, round, irregular grain; veins and wrinkles are often visible and pronounced

Feel: Dry, responsive, and well-rounded

Hand: Yielding

Change over time: Softens and becomes more supple with use.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

    Rouge Pivoine is a pink leaning red, brighter than Rouge H and softer than Casaque. On Togo it looks slightly deeper than in photos.

    I take it on flights because a 30 fits under the seat and Togo doesn't care about being shoved anywhere. Laptop, a scarf, a book, snacks and a spare shirt all went in on the last trip. It's not a delicate bag and that's why I love it.

The zip top means I am not anxious the way I am with an open bag, which is why I chose it over a Picotin. Clemence in a pale pink has already softened and the sides slump a bit when it is empty. Rain cover came with it and I use it, because pale Clemence and British weather are not friends.
