Unlike other leathers, Epsom is an embossed leather, meaning its grain is pressed into the leather rather than being a natural feature. This gives it a rigid structure, making it highly scratch-resistant and easy to clean.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

    There are marks. Of course there are marks, it is white and nearly twenty years old. The base has some greying at the corners and one handle is slightly darker than the other. None of that stopped me. The 30 shape in Epsom still stands up straight and that is the bit I cared about.
