Named after the African country, reflecting the "Africa" theme of the year it was created (1997). Togo is a grained leather made from baby calf skin. It is extremely popular due to its scratch resistance and ability to hold its shape.

First appeared in the collections: 1997

Appearance: Matt finish, round, irregular grain; veins and wrinkles are often visible and pronounced

Feel: Dry, responsive, and well-rounded

Hand: Yielding

Change over time: Softens and becomes more supple with use.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

    Found this at a consignment place and the Togo has that soft old slouch new bags do not have. W35 by H25 by D18 takes my laptop, a folder, gym kit and lunch. Heavy when loaded, my shoulder knows about it by evening, but I would not swap it.

    Bleu Jean is such a 2010 colour and I mean that as a compliment. It is properly denim, not navy, not sky.

30 by 22 by 15 is the size where a Birkin actually earns its keep. Laptop, folder, water bottle, gym top, all in. Etoupe is grey enough for the office and warm enough that it does not look cold. Only thing is the palladium plaque needs a wipe most days.
