Named in tribute to the daughter of the designer who introduced it into the collections, this leather was developed for luggage and is the ultimate example of a grained leather that has been drummed. This process softens the skin and brings a generous grain to the surface.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

Clemence in the 35 has slouched a fair bit over the years and the pink panel has softened. It looks lived in rather than tired.

Bougainvillea is a hot pink and gris tourterelle is a soft dove grey and I would never have put them together myself, but it works. Gold hardware pushes it warm. It's a 35 so it's big and Clemence is heavy, and my shoulder has opinions by the end of a long day. Full set arrived including the rain cover and booklet.
