The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

Sent it in for a clean last year, the denim panels came back noticeably brighter than expected for a bag well over ten years old.

This is a 2012 bag and the denim sections have faded a little the way real denim does, which I actually think improves it. At 35 by 25 by 18 I've packed two days of clothes in there. The Evercalf parts show scuffs more than the denim, no surprise.

The Ghillies with black Evercalf against the denim panels is a much sportier Birkin than I expected. Brushed palladium suits the whole idea.
