Ostrich skin is a precious leather identifiable by its follicles, from which feathers grow. Hermès flattens these follicles and triples the skin to create a material with a unique, two-tone appearance.

First appeared in the collections: 1920

Appearance: Pronounced follicular grain, matte-to-satiny finish

Feel: Firm and textured

Hand: Rigid

Change over time: Sensitive to light; darkens and develops a satiny shine

The story behind

Created in the 1930s, the Kelly bag was named in 1956 when Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco unveiled it to the world. Its shape and iconic details have since been adapted and redesigned to create small leather goods. Straps, claps, padlocks, leather bells and keys enhance wallets, coin purses or pouches that can be worn in many different ways.

    Ostrich is lighter in the hand than I expected for a 25 and that matters when you carry it all day. The strap was included so I alternate. My only worry is oils, I was told to keep it away from moisturiser and now I am paranoid.

I asked for something I could wear to the office without it looking like a going out bag and this is it. Plomb sits somewhere between charcoal and slate depending on the light. Gold hardware is warmer than I usually go for but it works against the grey better than palladium would have.

The second generation mini Lindy is slightly deeper at 9.5 and the strap is shorter, which suits me better at 5 foot 2. Swift in a pale pink is the combination most likely to end in tears though, and I already have a faint grey line on the base. Palladium keeps it looking cool rather than sugary.
