Named after the English "Box" tanning technique, Box calfskin is the oldest leather in the Hermès catalog. It has a highly polished, glossy finish and a structured hand.

First appeared in the collections: 1920s

Appearance: Smooth and glossy with a long, fine grain

Feel: Polished and ultra-smooth

Hand: Firm and structured

Change over time: Sensitive to scratches; develops a beautiful satiny patina

The story behind

Created in the 1930s, the Kelly bag was named in 1956 when Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco unveiled it to the world. Its shape and iconic details have since been adapted and redesigned to create small leather goods. Straps, claps, padlocks, leather bells and keys enhance wallets, coin purses or pouches that can be worn in many different ways.

    I hesitated for ages between Box and Epsom and went with Box because I liked the idea of it aging. Six months in there are faint marks near the base and honestly they look fine, like a patina forming. Palladium keeps it cold and sharp. The strap gets used maybe once a month.
