These are the most precious and exclusive exotic leathers used by Hermès. Porosus crocodile and Niloticus crocodile feature symmetrical scales and come in shiny (Lisse) or matte finishes. Alligator comes from the Mississippi river and is renowned for its larger scales and intense color depth.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

Fifteen years in and I finally took it to be looked over. The matte scales still have zero flex marks, whoever owned it before me barely used it lol.

I have wanted a So Black since I first saw one and the matte niloticus version is the one I would have chosen anyway. It is genuinely difficult to photograph because the black hardware just vanishes. Only came with the dustbag and lock set, which for something this old is expected.
