Originally tanned near the village of Barr in Alsace, Barenia is an iconic Hermès heritage leather. It is a "living" leather that absorbs light scratches and develops a beautiful dark patina over time.

First appeared in the collections: 1970s

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

Barenia on the outside with Toile H is the combination I wanted for years and the fauve is already darkening on the handles.

The canvas panel keeps the weight down which matters at this size, and the ficelle reads a warm cream against the tan leather. Barenia will patina fast if you use it, mine has a mark on the back already from a car seatbelt and I'm not upset about it.
