Named after Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver's Travels, to highlight its resemblance to the now-discontinued Gulliver calfskin. Swift is a fine, semi-smooth leather that absorbs dye beautifully, resulting in radiant colors.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

    35 with 18 of depth is enormous. I use it as a weekend bag and it takes two days of clothes without complaining.

    Only the lock set came with mine. No box, no dust bag, which on a limited edition I found a bit sad. The bag itself is in good shape though and the canvas has held its colour better than I expected given the age. The Swift trim shows some wear at the corners.

Sellier Box calf is the most formal version of this bag and it shows. It goes to weddings and dinners and looks slightly out of place at a supermarket. The 25 came with the strap so I can go across the body, though I rarely do because the leather rubs against coat buttons and I panic.
