Originally tanned near the village of Barr in Alsace, Barenia is an iconic Hermès heritage leather. It is a "living" leather that absorbs light scratches and develops a beautiful dark patina over time.

First appeared in the collections: 1970s

Appearance: Smooth, matte, with visible natural veins

Feel: Waxy and full-bodied

Change over time: Darkens and develops a rich satiny patina

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

This one is going to my niece eventually, she already calls dibs every time she visits. Thirteen years in the Barenia has gone this deep amber color that no new bag could fake, and the flag panel with the bleu de galice still looks sharp against it, canvas held up better than I expected honestly.

Bought it on a trip and carried it home on the plane rather than checking it, which felt insane at the time. Gold hardware against the Barenia is exactly right. Rain cover came with it and I have used it more than once because Barenia and rain do not mix.
