Named after Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver's Travels, to highlight its resemblance to the now-discontinued Gulliver calfskin. Swift is a fine, semi-smooth leather that absorbs dye beautifully, resulting in radiant colors.

The story behind
A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

Took it to Lisbon for four days and it swallowed a light jacket, a water bottle and my camera without looking stuffed. 25 is smaller than people think but the 13 depth helps. One scuff on the swift near the handle already, from the plane I think.

The cargo pockets are the reason I bought it. Phone in one, transit card in the other, and I stopped digging around inside.

I nearly went for etoupe and I'm glad I didn't, this is warmer and it works with the browns and creams I actually wear. The Togo grain gives it a bit of texture so it doesn't look flat in the tan, and after four months there's no real wear.

I told myself for years that I would only buy neutrals and then this happened. Rose azalee is not subtle, it is a proper flower colour, and palladium keeps it from going sweet. I wear it with grey and navy mostly. Swift feels soft in the hand in a way Epsom never does.

My SA seemed genuinely happy handing this one over, said it took a while to track down that exact combo of rose azalee and the nata interior. I nearly teared up in the boutique, the brushed gold in person is so much softer looking than I expected from photos.
