Named after Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver's Travels, to highlight its resemblance to the now-discontinued Gulliver calfskin. Swift is a fine, semi-smooth leather that absorbs dye beautifully, resulting in radiant colors.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

    Bought it for travel and it has been on three flights already. The outside pocket swallows my passport and boarding pass so I stop digging around at the gate. Only gripe is the canvas is already looking a bit grubby along the bottom.

35 by 25 by 12 with those outside pockets means I can travel with it. Passport in the front pocket, everything else inside.
