These are the most precious and exclusive exotic leathers used by Hermès. Porosus crocodile and Niloticus crocodile feature symmetrical scales and come in shiny (Lisse) or matte finishes. Alligator comes from the Mississippi river and is renowned for its larger scales and intense color depth.

Appearance: Structured scales, either highly glazed or matte

Feel: Structured and textured

Hand: Rigid

Change over time: Develops a deep patina; shiny finish softens, while matte finish acquires a subtle glow

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

    Never thought I'd be someone who wanted an all noir bag with black hardware but here we are. The alligator panels against the Madame catch light completely differently, so it's not flat at all even though it's one colour. 20 is tiny, I carry a card case, phone and a key. That's the deal and I accepted it.

    The 20 size is more of an evening thing for me. 11 deep helps but the opening is narrow so digging around is awkward.
