Named after Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver's Travels, to highlight its resemblance to the now-discontinued Gulliver calfskin. Swift is a fine, semi-smooth leather that absorbs dye beautifully, resulting in radiant colors.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

Swift handles and corners against the pale wicker look great but Swift is the part that will suffer. Mine already has a water mark on one handle.

The wicker body with gold Swift trim is a summer bag in the most literal sense. I take it to lunches by the sea and nowhere else. The osier is surprisingly rigid and it has not warped, though a couple of the weave strands have gone slightly fuzzy at the corners after a season.

The wicker is stiffer than I expected. It does not squash at all.
