Named after Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver's Travels, to highlight its resemblance to the now-discontinued Gulliver calfskin. Swift is a fine, semi-smooth leather that absorbs dye beautifully, resulting in radiant colors.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

The Quadrille canvas is a check in three colours and the sanguine Swift trim ties it together. Much more playful in person than a plain Birkin.

Came with padlock, clochette, rain cover, dustbag and keys but no box. The Swift corners are where these will go eventually and mine already has a faint rub on the front right, which on a limited run stings a bit.
