The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

    Brushed gold is the detail. Matte, no glare, and it does not show every fingerprint the way polished does.

    This came to me secondhand from someone who clearly kept it in a closet. Chevre holds shape better than any Togo bag I own and the corners are untouched. No box, but the rain cover and booklet were in the dustbag. Saphir looks black indoors and blue outside.
