Unlike other leathers, Epsom is an embossed leather, meaning its grain is pressed into the leather rather than being a natural feature. This gives it a rigid structure, making it highly scratch-resistant and easy to clean.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

    Bleu paradis with bougainvillea is a special order combination I would not have been brave enough to design myself, but someone was and I'm grateful. The brushed gold is the detail that makes it, matte rather than shiny so it doesn't fight with the blue. Epsom holds everything sharp, which this pairing needs or it would look chaotic.

Found this at a vintage dealer and spent a week deciding. Box calf scratches if you look at it wrong and this one has clearly lived, but the patina on the brown is warm and the gold hardware has gone slightly soft in colour. The strap was included, which I didn't expect.
