These are the most precious and exclusive exotic leathers used by Hermès. Porosus crocodile and Niloticus crocodile feature symmetrical scales and come in shiny (Lisse) or matte finishes. Alligator comes from the Mississippi river and is renowned for its larger scales and intense color depth.

Change over time: Develops a deep patina; shiny finish softens, while matte finish acquires a subtle glow

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

    Gris tourterelle is a dove grey and the pink lifts it just enough. Two colours that should not work on crocodile and somehow do.

    A horseshoe stamp bicolour in shiny porosus is a bit of a fever dream. Gris tourterelle outside, rose scheherazade as the contrast, and brushed gold hardware which is softer than normal gold and stops the whole thing from screaming. The scales have that glassy porosus shine that catches every light source in the room.
