Named after the African country, reflecting the "Africa" theme of the year it was created (1997). Togo is a grained leather made from baby calf skin. It is extremely popular due to its scratch resistance and ability to hold its shape.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

Special order took forever and I nearly forgot I'd asked. Brushed gold was the piece I was least sure about and now it's my favorite part, it looks older and softer than polished gold does. The yellow lining is a genuine mood lift every time I open it.
