The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

Noir and vanille on a matte alligator 25 is exactly what I would have ordered myself if I had the chance, so buying someone else's special order felt like cheating. Everything was in the box, lock set, felt, booklet, the certificate, a copy of the receipt. Brushed palladium was the detail that sold me.
