The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

Waited a long time for this one and honestly the anxiety about carrying craie was worse than the reality. Yes it shows. Yes I wipe it. But the brushed gold is matte enough that it doesn't scream, and the grey lining against the chalk is genuinely lovely when the flap is open.
