Named after the African country, reflecting the "Africa" theme of the year it was created (1997). Togo is a grained leather made from baby calf skin. It is extremely popular due to its scratch resistance and ability to hold its shape.

First appeared in the collections: 1997

Appearance: Matt finish, round, irregular grain; veins and wrinkles are often visible and pronounced

Feel: Dry, responsive, and well-rounded

Hand: Yielding

Change over time: Softens and becomes more supple with use.

The story behind

A chance encounter on a flight between Paris and London in 1984 sparked the creation of the Birkin. Actress Jane Birkin complained to Jean-Louis Dumas, the Executive Chairman of Hermès, about her struggle to find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. Dumas immediately sketched a spacious, rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching, and the Birkin was born.

    30 is my working size and the Togo means I'm not precious about it, even in this colourway. The white panels have stayed remarkably clean, I think because Togo grain is forgiving. The brushed gold has held up too, no wear on the touchpoints.

    Only the dustbag and lock set came with it. No box, no receipt, no paperwork proving the special order, which for an HSS bag I found frustrating.

Full paperwork including the cites certificate and the rain cover. For a 2018 exotic that's the difference between wanting it and buying it. My only note is a slightly dry patch on the matte alligator near the base that I've been told is normal and I've decided to believe them.
